The origins of April Fool's Day are not known at all. There are numerous legends that are handed down from generation to generation. One of the most plausible theories would concern Bertrand of San Genesio, patriarch of Aquileia from 1334 to 1350 who miraculously freed a pope choked in the throat by a herringbone. So out of gratitude, the pontiff would have decreed that fish should not be eaten in Aquileia, every first of the month.
