Let's go to the discovery of Chlorella , a single-celled algae of fresh water, belonging to the Chlorophyte family.
It is part of the grouping of green algae, the most similar to higher plants. It reproduces very quickly and is native to the brackish waters of equatorial Africa.
Due to its speed of reproduction and ease of cultivation it has been and still is used in the laboratory to test chemical mechanisms. In 1946 Melvin Calvin used it together with his collaborators to identify the dark phase of photosynthesis.
The name Chlorella was coined from the Greek “ chloros ” which means green and from the Latin diminutive suffix “ ella ” which means small.
